This special session aims to explore the growing challenges that climate change presents to the tourism ecosystem, focusing on how both theoretical advancements and practical strategies can support the resilience and adaptation of destinations and stakeholders, including tourism service providers and tourists. As global temperatures rise and extreme weather events become more frequent, there is increasing concern about the quality of the visitor experience, shifts in destination attractiveness, thermal discomfort, and the escalating environmental pressures impacting tourism.
To address these complex challenges, it is crucial to integrate theoretical insights, innovative methodological approaches, and innovative mitigation strategies. These approaches must balance environmental sustainability with enhanced visitor experiences, benefiting both tourists and local communities.
The session thus covers key topics such as impact assessment methodologies, infrastructure adaptation, visitor comfort, sustainable tourism practices, the role of technology and innovation, and the economic and operational impacts of climate change on the tourism destinations. By examining policy frameworks, data-driven tools, mitigation strategies, and marketing adaptations, the session will provide insights into how tourism service providers, destinations, and tourists can better adapt to the impacts of climate change.

Track: Bridging tourists and destinations through storytelling
Chair
Ana Cláudia Campos
Faculty of Economics, University of Algarve
Storytelling has become a powerful and popular way for destinations to promote their unique and distinctive values to visitors. Additionally, it is seen as a viable path towards sustainable tourism practices, by adjusting destinations’ need to develop to the need for heritage conservation and local communities’ well-being and quality of life. Evidence shows storytelling appeals to visitors and residents alike, as stories carry the essence of a place, and visitors are earnest in listening to them. Destinations’ stories tell about a community’s culture, history, and people, a combination that contributes to make a tourism experience a memorable one. Heroes, events, anecdotes, and practices are a way to get deeper into a community’s past and present by understanding a unique worldview. Moreover, stories promise authenticity. From the academic point of view, the theme is capturing the increased attention of researchers, as many issues remain to be explored: are stories able to increase visitor engagement while avoiding undesired effects on destination overcrowding; is there evidence that destination storytelling is implemented in such a way as to broaden the tourism places and spaces; what challenges remain to be addressed concerning sustainable practices in the destination and the role of storytelling in the process; how can tourism experience design evolve with the help of storytelling; are there success cases that illuminate the way towards cultural preservation with stories serving as background to local initiatives; how is storytelling bridging hosts and visitors in what remains the most valuable goal of tourism, i.e. the building of peace and global tolerance? These and many other issues are open to discussion.

Call for contributions for special session on “Challenges for tourism in coastal areas: sustainability, climate change and spatial planning”
Chair: João Paulo Jorge (Polytechnic of Leiria, Portugal), jpjorge@ipleiria.pt
Track: Geography
This special session intends to provide an overview on the current debate on spatial planning in coastal areas considering a wide range of constraints and possible solutions regarding adaptations. Coastal areas are territories that integrate multiple economic circuits and are often located in urbanized areas, with high population density and, consequently, are very exposed to urban pressure and real estate speculation. They are also vulnerable environments, highly exposed to climate change and, consequently, to rising sea levels and coastal erosion, which clearly threaten the livelihood of coastal communities, their natural and socio-economic systems, thus posing a crucial question regarding urban regeneration. In literature two sets of variables are often used to assess the degree to which the potential of systems may be affected: one set concerning human or demographic sensitivity and another related to land use sensitivity. Thus, regarding sustainability, management and planning instruments are crucial and will be considered to this session.
Chair: João Paulo Jorge (Polytechnic of Leiria, Portugal), jpjorge@ipleiria.pt
Topics:
- Spatial planning, coastal areas, tourism sustainability, climate change adaptations, coastal communities.

Drinking water is a crucial resource for tourism. This activity is recognized as a massive user of water, which has caused enormous pressure on local and regional water supplies. The complex relationship between water and tourism has been gaining prominence and increasing importance from a tourism perspective. This is especially true considering that (i)the availability of water and its quality are essential for the attractiveness of a tourist destination; (ii) the negative impacts on water resources can reduce the viability of a given tourist destination and decrease the tourist's desire to revisit that destination. The issue of water sustainability in tourism has become increasingly urgent, mainly since many of the world's major tourist destinations are situated in water-scarce regions, such as the Mediterranean. This urgency is further underscored by the well-documented trend of decreasing precipitation and rising temperatures, reducing water availability, and depletion of surface and underground water resources.

Track: 1.8. Government/public sector/policy and ONG; 2.5 Sustainability; 3.2 Challenges, Future & Trends
Chair
Agita Livina, Institute of Social, Economic and Humanities Research at Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences, Latvia; Agita.Livina@va.lv
The special session seeks to explore and address critical barriers to circularity within the tourism and travel industry and highlight supportive tools and best practice cases. Additionally, the session will examine the methodological challenges involved in assessing circularity for tourism as a system, including key categories such as transport and mobility operators, accommodation providers, ground activity operators, food and beverage services, event organizers, travel agencies, and destination managers.
While the theoretical contributions of the tourism sector to circularity are well-documented, practical applications still need to be explored (Bosone & Nocca, 2022). The operational aspect of circularity often requires time for meaningful implementation and evaluation, thus delaying measurable outcomes (Uvarova et al., 2023). Research addressing the practical implementation of circularity principles and alignment with the European Green Deal also highlights a gap in the evaluation of the resources needed for the initial stages of implementation at organisational level (Valls-Val et al., 2022). Although comprehensive ecological assessment frameworks are available in the literature, they often need more practical, operational guidelines (Korhonen et al., 2018).
Bosone and Nocca emphasize the importance of raising awareness and expanding knowledge in this area. Through this session, we aim to uncover new insights and practical approaches to applying circularity principles in the tourism sector at micro and macro level.
Topics
-
Barriers for business to implement circularity
-
Knowledges and skills of circularity in tourism business
-
Supportive tools for circularity
-
Best practices of circular solutions and products
-
Consumer behaviour for circular solutions in tourism services
-
Maturity level of circularity in tourism
-
Methodological approaches for circularity measurement

Digital twins are virtual representations that mirror the real dynamics. Data from the real world feeds the digital twin from various sources, such as sensors, allowing the physical and digital worlds to be bi-directionally linked. This way destinations can be monitored, simulated and analysed in real time informing decision-making at multiple levels supporting data-driven strategies, plans and actions. Digital twins are an innovative technology in tourism studies that can potentially provide a better understanding of tourism dynamics in destinations and visualisation of crowding, patterns of visitation, tourist flows, consumption behaviour. It also provides a platform that supports multi-level governance by enhancing the opportunity for interactive integration and exploration of multi-stakeholder observations and future visions for a destination. Digital twins are a novel approach in tourism studies and destination management with the potential to promote smart and sustainable tourism destinations.
The special session welcomes abstracts addressing, but not limited to, the following sometimes overlapping themes:
-
Digital twins for destination management
-
Governance models supported by digital twins
-
Tools for making collaborative and innovative scenarios and pathways
-
Smart destinations and digital twin applications
-
Geospatial data and tourism
-
Tourism carrying capacity and overtourism mitigation
-
Tourism resilience and adaptation planning
-
Digital twins for cultural and heritage preservation
-
Ethics and sustainability in digital twin use

Being traditional centres of attraction and concentration of tourist flows and activities, many coastal communities are the focus of tourist dynamics that constantly challenge their carrying capacity, resilience and sustainability.
The consequences that the pandemic context has brought to tourism, especially the most sought-after destinations, together with the ongoing changes in tourists' motivations and behaviour, add complexity to the reflection and action that such spaces require.
Therefore, they are also spaces where tourism calls for qualification and innovation and an ever-increasing capacity to regenerate products, communities and the territories that serve as their setting.
In this context, a careful look at the cultural and heritage dimensions associated with maritimity and the liminality of these sea/land interfaces compels us to carry out a needed reflection - human-centred - on these coastal communities. Tourism management and development strategies aimed at creative and regenerative tourism are particularly relevant.
This special session seeks to bring together the vast spectrum of themes that revolve around this reflection, from a multidisciplinary perspective and open to different socio-geographical contexts.

The concept of locality in hospitality systems is often contrasted with globalism. Locality emphasizes the geographic and cultural uniqueness of a region’s culinary practices, forming a distinct gastronomic identity that attracts tourists seeking authenticity. The growing interest in local food reflects consumers’ desire to reconnect with producers and support local communities as an alternative to the globalized food system. Mobility, in this context, refers both to the physical movement of tourists and the social mobility generated through cultural and economic exchanges in food tourism that benefit local socio-economic situation. Recent studies highlight the connection between food tourism and social sustainability, emphasizing its role in fostering social equity and intergenerational bonds. Food tourism, including events like culinary festivals, can engage diverse communities and promote socio-economic resilience and cultural sustainability. The session welcomes a range of topics aligned with the sustainability discourses of locality, mobility, and community empowerment in food tourism.
Topics
-
Connection of locality and mobility: supply chains in gastronomy
-
Culinary tourism and community empowerment
-
Role of urban farming in food tourism: Bringing local food to cities
-
Gastronomy, identity, and empowerment: Preserving culinary traditions through tourism

The poly-crisis approach, regarded as a collection of interrelated and possibly game-changing global threats to the tourism sector, requires mandatory responsible tourism planning and public policy development, particularly in rural territories. Within this context, tourism research has been paying much attention to such regions as they are arguably susceptible to responsible planning and development strategies and special interest tourism models adding value to such territories and local communities. This is especially important if we consider that such areas, could benefit from context-related tourism planning and development strategies according to their territorial idiosyncrasies.
Therefore, this session aims to address state-of-the-art in tourism planning and development strategies, public policies, territorial models analysis, good practices, and case studies in rural territories encouraging original contributions from tourism researchers, tourism-related public bodies and private organizations and practitioners.

This special session aims to stimulate discussion on the importance of understanding space-time tourist behaviour (movements and attractions visited) and its implications for managing tourist flows, enhancing destination experiences, and promoting sustainability. Tourist movements through time and space are essential for efficient destination management, whether in urban or rural areas, thematic routes, natural parks, or cultural heritage sites. Understanding these movements helps address both the opportunities and challenges that tourism brings to different types of destinations.
As tourism becomes increasingly globalised, there is a growing need to employ advanced technologies to monitor and manage tourist flows. In addressing overtourism, these tools help destinations anticipate congestion, attempt to redistribute tourists, and develop more sustainable visitation strategies. Furthermore, analysing the affective dimensions of tourist experiences in relation to space-time movements provides valuable insights into how tourists consume spaces, and how destinations can better cater to diverse visitor needs while ensuring long-term sustainability.
The session will also consider the impact of climate change, which is altering the spatiotemporal patterns of tourism. Extreme weather events and rising temperatures influence tourists’ on-destination space-time decisions, including their movements, the attractions they visit, and the modes of transport they choose. Therefore, understanding space-time movements is critical for adapting tourism policies and ensuring that destinations remain resilient, accessible, and attractive in the face of these environmental changes.
Topics:
-
Innovations in methodological approaches and data collection methods (e.g., electrodermal activity and sensory metrics, participatory and smart data, eye-tracking, GIS integration, longitudinal and comparative studies across urban, rural, peripheral areas, and different countries)
-
Space-time behaviour and tracking technologies (e.g., mobile apps, drones, GPS devices, RFID, Wi-Fi tracking, and wearable sensors, tools for responsive management )
-
Sustainable destination management (e.g., optimise resource use, manage tourist flows and congestion in high-traffic areas, promote dislocation to low-density and secondary attractions, and map mobility conflicts between residential and tourist mobility practices)
-
Overtourism mitigation through space-time analysis (e.g., peak visitation times analysis, strategies to influence visitation patterns, interventions assessment, crowd dynamics management, nudging experiments)
-
Emotions and affective dimension of space-time consumption (e.g., thrill, excitement, anxiety, street rage; influence of emotions on tourist space-time activity; place-specific moods and sensory modalities)
-
GIS for enhanced destination management (e.g., applying GIS to visualise, manage, and optimise tourist flows, considering diverse geographical, social, and ethnic contexts)
-
Climate change and tourist patterns (e.g., anticipating shifts in spatiotemporal patterns due to climate change, testing the effects of interventions, such as cooling solutions, on space-time tourist behaviour)

Sustainable leadership became part of the governments and organizations’ agenda in Portugal with Decree-Law No. 89/2017 on sustainable finance, with the obligation to report companies’ non-financial results. On 27 September 2017, Turismo de Portugal launched the ‘Tourism Strategy 2027’, an official document for the tourism sector, approved by Resolution of the Council of Ministers 134/2017. The vision of this strategic document was: ‘To affirm tourism as a hub for economic, social and environmental development throughout the territory, positioning Portugal as one of the most competitive and sustainable tourist destinations in the world.’. It established priorities and goals for the economic, social and environmental sustainability of the tourism sector, but are these goals being met? This session aims to explore the main economic, social and environmental performance indicators of the Tourism 2027 Strategy and how sustainable leadership can contribute to measuring, monitoring and creating effective actions to achieve the sustainability of the three factors that, by definition, are indicators of sustainable development.

Public policies for sustainable tourism
-
Sustainable leadership in the tourism sector
-
Economic performance of the tourism sector
-
Environmental performance of the tourism sector
-
Social performance of the tourism sector
-
Residents' satisfaction with tourism

European cities, particularly those in Western Europe, have been popular destinations for many decades due to their diverse tourist offer, including prominent cultural attractions, rich heritage resources, distinctive architecture, varied gastronomy, and beautiful natural landscapes. However, the large number of visitors attracted to these destinations puts pressure on local resources and communities. Consequently, more governments and key stakeholders are seeking solutions to address these challenges.
Overtourism, perceived as excessive number of visitors leading to the degradation of places and resources, has been observed in several European city destinations recently. This phenomenon is causing host communities to question the benefits brought by tourism. Therefore, the critical question remains: how can popular destinations reconcile the benefits of tourism with the quality of life of local residents, while also considering other social and environmental implications, in their efforts to promote more sustainable destinations?
The session welcomes several topics that align with Goal 11 of the Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda.
Topics:
-
Challenges for urban tourism destinations in Western Europe
• Balancing economic benefits and environmental sustainability in urban destination
• Reducing the carbon footprint of urban destinations
• The role of policy and governance in sustainable tourism development
• Community engagement and participation in sustainable tourism
• Technological innovations for sustainable tourism management

Gastronomy is essential in tourism, transcending mere culinary enjoyment to become a profound vehicle for cultural exchange, education, and health promotion. The special session "Tourism Foodies: Gastronomy at the Crossroads of Education, Health, and Culture" reflects the growing recognition of food as a sustenance and a significant factor in shaping travel experiences and understanding global cultures. In tourism studies, gastronomy offers a unique lens through which travellers engage with local traditions, values, and ecosystems. Food becomes a cultural narrative, telling the story of a destination's history and heritage while promoting health-conscious choices and sustainability. It enriches tourism by fostering deeper connections between visitors and the places they explore, making it essential for academics and professionals to investigate how these intersections can enhance the overall experience and support local economies. By analysing the relationship between gastronomy, tourism, education, and culture, researchers can uncover new ways to create sustainable tourism models that benefit travellers and local communities. This session aims to explore these intersections, showcasing food's importance in shaping individual and collective travel narratives.

The link between Tourism and Heritage enhances the cultural content of the space, the tourist experience, and identity differentiation, in an increasingly competitive environment. The intensity and impact of information and communication technologies (ICT) on tourism also make the smart concept applicable to it. The smart tourism experience, driven by aggregated information, the spread of connectivity, and permanent synchronisation, tends to be efficient and significant. In this framework, tourists play a decisive role, given that they not only consume, but also create and improve data, which represent the structure of the experience, and, through their digital footprint, access information and add value through mobile devices and tools.
Given the relevance and timeliness of the topics under analysis, aware of contemporary technological evolution and the impact it contemplates on science and tourist activity, a Special Session is proposed that allows highlighting the process, and unavoidable interaction between Tourism, Heritage, and Technology.
We highlight essential repercussions on the levels of services and destinations, organisations and business models, resources, and instruments, given a more versatile structure and different concepts regarding added value, with the consequent innovative impact in terms of competitiveness and sustainability, strategic vision, management and marketing models, highlighting its usefulness in co-creating positively differentiating tourism experiences for stakeholders, namely tourists, as well as accommodations and destinations.
Topics:
- 1.9. Heritage and Culture
- 2.2. Territories; 2.5. Sustainability
- 3.2. Challenges, Future & Trends; 3.3. New Technologies and Innovation

This special session aims to generate greater debate on sustainable mobility in tourism, bearing in mind that this relationship currently faces a number of challenges. It also aims to contribute to possible solutions aimed at greater sustainability, but also at interconnecting cultural and industrial tourism products. Tourist mobility has a direct impact on the ecological footprint of destinations, especially in urbanised areas with high population density and growing tourist infrastructures. As international tourism expands, pressure arises to integrate more efficient and sustainable transport practices that minimise environmental impacts, such as carbon emissions, and respond to the accessibility needs of tourists. In addition, sustainable mobility is a crucial factor in tackling the challenges of climate change, such as the transition to low-emission transport and the adaptation of tourist destinations to new patterns of traveller behaviour. Public policies and planning and management instruments play a vital role in promoting more sustainable and efficient tourism. As well as creating tourist products in destinations that can mitigate environmental impacts, leading to greater sustainability of tourist destinations.

Track: 2.3 Risk and Resilience
The United Nations predict that by 2030, the number of people living in cities will be over 60%. Meanwhile, international tourism has grown continuously, excluding the pandemic's setbacks. Numerous factors may justify this phenomenon, such as the expansion of airports in smaller cities, an increase in routes, low fares, improved air and land connectivity, ease of border crossing, a favorable international climate, and the growth of travel and city break culture. In this context, cities are aggregators of various sectors and services, positioning themselves as crucial social and economic centers that attract residents and visitors. However, increasing population density and overtourism have burdened and pressured cities, presenting challenges to all stakeholders. Beyond increasing social, economic, and environmental unsustainability, this scenario can weaken destinations’ safety by increasing risks that may jeopardize people's physical integrity, such as crime, accidents, and diseases. This special session aims to explore the different cause-and-effect relationships between tourism development in cities, risk, and safety. The session welcomes several topics that align with Goal 11 of the Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda.

-
Tourists and residents’ safety in urban spaces
-
Perceptions of vulnerability and risk
-
Risk management and prevention
-

The tourism and hospitality sector offers significant opportunities for gender equality and women's empowerment and has immense potential to drive socio-economic change. However, persistent gender inequalities persist in various segments of the sector, from unequal access to leadership roles to the gender pay gap and challenges related to workplace safety. As the industry continues to evolve post-pandemic and embrace digital transformation and sustainability, there is an urgent need for focused research that explores both the barriers and opportunities for women in tourism and hospitality.
This special session invites contributions that critically examine the intersection of gender and tourism, addressing key issues such as the representation of women in leadership positions, the impact of public policies on gender equality, and the experiences of women in both formal and informal sectors of tourism.
We seek papers that provide fresh perspectives on the role of women in driving sustainability initiatives, managing the complexities of migration and employment in tourism, and navigating digital innovation within the industry. Moreover, we encourage research that explores women's invisibility in the sector, such as their unpaid labour in family-run accommodations and local tourism activities.
We are particularly interested in studies that highlight the role of tourism as a tool for economic empowerment, focusing on case studies of female entrepreneurship in community-led tourism, the effects of government initiatives aimed at reducing gender disparities, and the promotion of inclusive practices in sustainable tourism. Equally important are discussions on the implications of solo female travel, gendered marketing in tourism, and the impact of luxury tourism on women as both consumers and professionals. This session also aims to address the global challenge of sex tourism, shedding light on its impact on women and exploring the phenomenon of female sex tourism in a socio-cultural context.
Contributions to this special session will offer insights into the transformative role that tourism and hospitality can play in achieving gender equality. We welcome theoretical, empirical, and case study-based papers from diverse disciplinary backgrounds, including sociology, gender studies, economics, and tourism management. Join us in this critical discussion as we strive to identify solutions that foster greater inclusion and empowerment of women in the tourism and hospitality industry.

The tourism and hospitality industry faces unprecedented changes in its workforce landscape, making this theme highly relevant for researchers and practitioners. Labour shortages, heightened by demographic shifts and post-pandemic recovery, impact the industry, making workforce recruitment and retention increasingly challenging. Beyond operational concerns, workers’ well-being and quality of life have come to the forefront, especially given the high-pressure, customer-facing nature of the tourism and hospitality sector. Ensuring decent working conditions and fostering an environment of inclusion and diversity is crucial to attracting and retaining talent. Migrant and expatriate workers, who form a significant part of this workforce, bring valuable cultural and social capital but face distinct challenges in terms of integration, rights, and access to career development opportunities. Moreover, the rise of technology and automation is reshaping job roles, demanding new skills and qualifications that many employees may lack, creating a pressing need for ongoing training and skill-building. As the industry grows and evolves, so do the challenges related to human capital. This session welcomes contributions that address these pressing concerns, fostering discussions on how the industry can adapt to these challenges while maintaining a skilled, diverse, resilient and sustainable workforce.
