Presentation
University of Coimbra (UC) and Macao Polytechnic University (MPU) established a dual PhD study framework (referred to as DPSF) leading to the award of dual PhD degrees in the area of informatics engineering and computer applied technology. Within this study framework, both institutions commit to award the following university titles:
a. The UC awards the "Doutoramento em Engenharia Informática (PhD in Informatics Engineering)" (referred to as DPIE).
b. The MPU awards the "PhD in Computer AppliedTechnology" (referred to as PCAT).
Who can Apply
Students enrolled in any of the two above programs will be eligible to apply for entering the DPSF. During the first two years of their studies, UC students enrolled in the DPIE can apply for entering the DPSF.
Conditions to the award of Dual PhD Degrees
To be awarded dual PhD degrees, students are obliged to fulfil the following conditions:
1. The students must be enrolled and registered at both institutions. Registration must be annually renewed.
2. Students initially enrolled in the DPIE at UC must:
- Comply with all UC and MPU defined conditions to the award of the DPIE and the PCAT, respectively.
- Receive joint supervision from UC and MPU.
- Complete one of the taught modules offered in the PCAT.
- Make a minimum stay of one school year at MPU during the development of their thesis work. This stay could be divided into two non-consecutive semesters.
Thesis defense of students enrolled in DPSF
UC Students enrolled in DPSF will defend the Thesis in their Home Institution (UC), where the students initially enrolled.
Maximum enrolment duration
The maximum enrolment duration for a DPSF student is 6 academic years, following the rules of the Home Institution. Any extension of the duration is not allowed. The doctoral thesis must be accepted for a public defense within the period mentioned.
Degree Awarded
After a successful thesis defense, the two institutions will confirm whether the student has met all requirements for the dual PhD degrees. Each institution will award its own PhD degree to students who fulfil its specific requirements. Students who meet the requirements of both institutions will receive a Doctoral Degree in Informatics Engineering from UC and a PhD in Computer Applied Technology from MPU.
Fees and other expenses
Students in DPSF must pay:
- The full tuition fee at their Home Institution (UC) during the whole period of the doctoral program.
- Other required fees (e.g. registration, study extension, insurance, diplomas, certificates) as set by either UC or MPU.
An administrative fee of €1,375 per student per semester applies during study at the Host Institution. UC will pay this fee to MPU for up to two semesters; after that, students must pay it themselves.
