Call for Papers
The period we are living is characterized by rare events that we have not experienced since the Cold War. The return of war to Europe, the diplomatic stalemate, the formation of blocs, the nuclear threats and the iron curtain that looms in the horizon bring back sad memories, with multiple consequences for both European and peripheral countries, but also for the rest of the world.
Short-run macroeconomics reveals an inflationary trend of economic and monetary origin that has gradually turned into a very high inflation associated with the energy shock, both in terms of prices, but mostly due to supply side disruptions. This event reminds us of the economic and geopolitical debates of the 1970s, which marked the end of the famous 30 glorious years.
At the structural level, three major "existential issues" are at stake. The first two are the climate shock and growing social inequalities associated with multi-dimensional poverty, features that are manifesting themselves at the global level. The third is the rapid ageing of the population, which affects mostly developed countries, but also certain emerging countries such as China and Russia. The migratory flows observed are fed by these challenges that need to be analysed in depth.
- Are we at the end of an era?
- Is a new "economic policy paradigm" urgently needed in a hyper-globalised world?
- Is change desired by civil society, business and politicians?
- Would this structural break have profound consequences for economic thinking?
- Is this the end of liberalism and a return to Keynesianism?
- Is this the end of globalisation and a return to protectionism?
- Is this the end of openness and the return to populism and nationalism?
