De 15 a 17 de dezembro de 2022, decorrerá no Colégio Almada Negreiros, Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas da Universidade Nova de Lisboa, o colóquio internacional “The Materiality of Modernisms“. Organização: Centre for European Modernism Studies – CEMS;  Instituto de História da Arte – NOVA FCSH; Instituto de Estudos de Literatura e Tradição – NOVA FCSH; Centro de Investigação e Estudos em Belas-Artes – CIEBA; Programa de Doutoramento em Materialidades da Literatura PD-FCT e Centro de Literatura Portuguesa – CLP/FLUC.

The conference will be held at the Nova University of Lisbon on December 15th-17th, 2022 and, as the title suggests, it will focus on the impact that the medial and material turn of the last decades had on the way (trans)national modernisms have been studied, discussed and reviewed, revealing the plural and multifarious features of the very concept of modernism, which eventually result in the shift of paradigm from “modernism” to “modernisms”.
The event aims to encourage reflection on a paradigm shift, occurring over the last decades, in which a greater attention dedicated to the study of media and to the concept of materiality has changed the ways in which we analyse literary and artistic codes and artefacts, as well as their forms of production and transmission. This shift has had a particular impact on modernist studies, opening the concept at a spatio-temporal level and also at the level of the works and authors included in the “canon”, enabling an ever increasing affirmation of the term “modernisms” instead of “modernism”.
