"Neural correlates of peripartum depression: a systematic review, meta-analysis and comparison to major depressive disorder".

We conducted the first large-scale meta-analysis on the brain correlates of peripartum depression (PPD) and compared them with non-peripartum major depression (fMDD).

We found that both PPD and fMDD present alterations in brain networks linked to emotional regulation, salience, and cognition. But! Some brain regions (insula, amygdala, precentral gyrus, precuneus) showed opposite patterns in PPD vs. fMDD.

This means that PPD is not just a subtype of depression—it likely involves a specific hormonal sensitivity and may require targeted interventions.
