Síntese do Projeto: MercuMEMORY evaluates the impact of short-term and longterm exposure to methylmercury (MeHg) in adult brain neuroinflammation, neurogenesis and cognitive decline. This project results from established collaborations between researchers from Brazil (Fortaleza) and Portugal (Coimbra) and focus on a health-socio-environmental relevant topic. Both research teams will develop the experimental work in line with established competences and available technologies, focusing on in vitro cellular and tissue models (mainly in Coimbra) and in vivo toxicity, morphology and behavior (mainly in Fortaleza). The collaborative work involves regular two-way site visits to foster collaboration, excellence science and advanced training. MercuMEMORY will highlight the need to further evaluate the impact of mercury toxicity in polluted, Amazon, Minas Gerais and Portuguese mining areas and to inspire health and environment protective measures by the authorities to promote the brain health and healthy living.
