SAFEFOREST | MSc | Semi-Autonomous Robotic System for Forest Cleaning and Fire Prevention
The Associação para o Desenvolvimento da Aerodinâmica Industrial (ADAI) opens a tender for the award of one (1) Research Grant (BI) for Master in the framework of the Scientific Research and Technological Development Project (IC&DT) SAFEFOREST – “Semi-Autonomous Robotic System for Forest Cleaning and Fire Prevention” with reference 45931, funded by the European Fund for Regional Development (FEDER), through the Operational Program for Competitiveness and Internationalization and / or the Regional Operational Program of the Center, of Portugal 2020, according to the System of Incentives to Companies (SI), regulated by Decree 57-A/2015 of 27 February.
Application Period: 15th November to 29th of November 2021
Work Plan: The selected candidate will develop tasks in the field of mobile field robotics and development of mechanisms for localization, navigation and mapping in the context of autonomous robotic systems for the forest. Tasks include:
1) Development of an algorithm for generating trajectories for an autonomous system for mapping the terrain using drones;
2) Development of sensory systems for field robots;
3) Development of mechanisms for localization, navigation and mapping for robotic systems in the forest;
4) Virtual simulation, testing and experimental validation of results and models obtained;
5) Production of scientific reports and articles based on the work developed;
6) Participation in the dissemination tasks and appreciation of the results obtained.
Scholarship duration: The scholarship will last for 6 months, with the possibility of renewal during the duration of the project, according to the grantee's performance, on an exclusive basis, according to FCT's advanced human resources training regulation.

Eligibility criteria
- MSc or equivalent in Computer Engineering, Mechanical engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Physical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or similar.
- Applicants with foreign academic degrees must present Certificate of Level Recognition in accordance with applicable law.
Selection process
The selection methods to be used are: curriculum evaluation, with a value of 50% for academic qualifications and 50% for the degree of satisfaction of knowledge and experience requirements. If the Jury deems it necessary, an interview may be held with the candidates placed in the first three positions according to the ordering resulting from the previous criteria. In this case, the final score will include the curriculum assessment (as described above), valued at 70%, and the interview, valued at 30%. If none of the candidates possess the appropriate profile (overall assessment below 50%), the scholarship will not be awarded.

Scientific Area: Computer Engineering, Mechanical engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Physical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or similar.
Admission Requirements: Masters who are enrolled, or who undertake to apply shortly after awarding the scholarship, in a doctoral program in the areas of Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Physical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or similar areas may apply. Candidates should preferably have a good knowledge of localization, navigation and mapping systems in the context of mobile field robotics, Robot Operating System (ROS) and computer programming. Knowledge of embedded sensors, electronics, PCB design, mechatronics and signal processing is valued as well as good knowledge of spoken and written English.
