International Microorganism Day was celebrated in Coimbra with a diverse and engaging programme open to all. The University of Coimbra, through microbiologists from the Centre for Mechanical Engineering, Materials and Processes - CEMMPRE, in partnership with the UC Exploratório, promoted a series of activities on the 14th, 15th and 17th September. The programme included Speed Dating with Microorganisms, offering attendees the chance to meet microbiologists from Coimbra involved in various research projects, and Viral - A contagious exhibition, an interactive display (https://www.exploratorio.pt/exposicoes-1/viral---uma-exposi%C3%A7%C3%A3o-contagiante). In addition to CEMMPRE researches, microbiologists from Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Coimbra, Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra, and Vasco da Gama University School also participated.

On International Microorganism Day itself, 17 September, the University of Coimbra partnered with the Portuguese Institute of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (IHMT) of the NOVA University Lisbon and the Lusophone Microbiology Network hosted the livestream event Conexões (Luso)Microbianas. This event brought together lecturers, researchers, and students from across the Portuguese-speaking world to present their work in microbiology and biotechnology. The livestream is now available on the Portuguese Microbiology Society's YouTube channel at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RaAsM6aSuro&t=2245s.

Additionally, anyone who is curious can also dive into the permanent online exhibition ‘Pet Microorganisms’ available at https://exploratorio.wixsite.com/microrganismos. This digital showcase features impressive photographs of microorganisms in Petri dishes, accompanied by insightful testimonies from dedicated researchers.

The celebration of International Microorganism Day in Coimbra highlighted the vital role of microorganisms in our world, fostering collaboration and curiosity through a rich programme of events that continues to engage audiences both in person and online.
