One position available on Multitool4 - Multifunctional Cutting Tools
The University of Coimbra opens a call for the assignment of a research grant, with one position, under the project Multitool4.
Who can apply: Graduates or Masters in the scientific area of Mechanical Engineering or Materials Engineering, enrolled in a master’s or PhD program or enrolled in a non-degree course.
The research grant aims to develop research work within the scope of the Multitool4 - Multifunctional Cutting Tools, which combines numerical and experimental approaches to model machining operations, in particular drilling, box opening and counterboring operations. The fellowships will be involved in the execution of the following tasks:
1. Development of numerical simulation models that allow the isolated analysis of each machining operation, for the different types of construction steel and pre-treated steel under study. These models will be used to evaluate the influence of tool geometry on cutting conditions, in combination with process parameters;
2. Development of numerical simulation models for different machining strategies, based on the integration of the different operations, sequentially, to include in the analysis factors such as work hardening of the material or residual stresses in the tool, induced by the previous operations. The models with the sequence of operations will be used to explore the process parameter space in order to evaluate the combination that leads to more robust solutions, i.e. less sensitive to potential variations in the mechanical properties of materials;
3. Results dissemination and participation in scientific management activities.
The research fellow will be mainly involved in the numerical component of the project, related to the construction of numerical models, sensitivity analysis to geometric and process parameters and correlation with experimental results
The research work will be carried out at Department of Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Science and Technology, University of Coimbra.
Necessary qualifications: Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, or Materials Engineering, and enrolled in a Ph.D. course or enrolled in a course not conferring an academic degree, with interest in numerical modelling.
Deadline: 4 july 2025
