Higher dissemination of renewable generation continues to be a hot issue and is often debated in terms of how it affects the current energy systems in different aspects in the transition from conventional energy technologies to green renewable of nowadays. The intermittent behavior of renewable resources together with the mismatch between the energy availability and demand result in the high need of energy storage systems and employing techniques, such as demand side management, to shorten such mismatch.

To fill part of the gap of the energy management methodologies, I dedicated my PhD studies to work on greening a Portuguese island, Porto Santo, as the case study of the aforementioned subject matter. Aiming to go 100% renewable, fossil fuel free island, considering all the limitation and constraints that an isolated grid might face to by serving in a tropical climate condition. Maximization of the use of all the available resources is the main goal of his mission.

Roham graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Urban Planning from the Azad University of Iran. Being always keen in energy systems and urban installations led him to the University of Coimbra (UC) where started his postgraduate studies in Energy for Sustainability (EFS) MSc program in 2012. The MSc program on EFS is of multidisciplinary nature where along with it he had the opportunity to work on his interests and improve his non-technological background regarding topics such as sustainable development, energy systems, energy economy, electric power grids and programming skill.

In short, he became extremely interested in the deployment of electric vehicles as an alternative to internal combustion engines, a topic which combines all his areas of interest: sustainability, energy efficiency, energy economy and smart grids serving for smart cities. What struck him the most was the new type of load imposed on electric power grids by charging batteries of EVs.

These facts had motivated him to accomplish my Master's dissertation on electric vehicles issues, entitled ''Development of an Algorithms to Optimize the Coordinated Charging Process of a Group of Electric Vehicles'', under the supervision of Professor Álvaro Gomes, Faculty of Sciences and Technology at the UC.
