I joined the Ph.D. program in Sustainable Energy Systems (MIT-Portugal Program) in 2018, following many years of aspiration to return to academia. I graduated as a civil engineer from Universidade Federal do Paraná (UFPR, Brazil), and in law from Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Paraná (PUC-PR, Brazil), and hold a master’s degree in hydraulic engineering (UFPR), but that all happened in the last was about time.

Following some years of work as a private consultant in the electricity sector, I joined the Brazilian Electricity Regulatory Agency (ANEEL) in 2005 and, since then, I have been working as a regulation specialist, with extensive experience in the overall operation of the institution, particularly in mediation, public participation, communication, institutional relations, and regulatory impact analysis.

The broader perspective and practice obtained at ANEEL came with a price – the constant concern about the future of the Brazilian Electricity Sector and the permanent feeling of an imminent disruptive event.

My experience reveals that the transformations that have occurred in the electricity sector in Brazil followed the major world trends and it is no secret that the regulation and operation of the electricity sector worldwide are in a time of increasing transformation – the transition. Currently, my main research interests are the drivers that will shape the future of the Brazilian Electricity Sector in the long-term; the international influence on its energy policy and regulation, particularly from the EU; and possible impacts derived from the Brazilian accession to the OECD.

In my opinion, the Energy for Sustainability (EfS) initiative the University of Coimbra was the correct choice to pursue my research. The multidisciplinary approach is undoubtedly the most suitable for the current reality and, besides that, the quality of the colleagues, teachers, supervisors, and the learning environment provide safe foundations for the development of the investigations.
