Job description: The Associação para o Desenvolvimento da Aerodinâmica Industrial (ADAI) opens a tender for the award of one (1) Research Grant (BI) for Master in the framework of the Scientific Research and Technological Development Project (IC&DT) HOUSE-REFUGE – “Development of better practices and rules for constructions and surroundings in areas prone to wildland-urban interface fires” with reference PCIF/AGT/0109/2018, funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology, through the R&D program for the prevention and combat of wildfires, determined by the Resolution of the Council of Ministers no. 159/2017.
Scientific Area: Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Physical Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or similar.
Admission Requirements: Masters who are enrolled, or who undertake to apply shortly after awarding the scholarship, in a doctoral program in the areas of Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Physical Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or similar. Candidates should preferably have a good knowledge of fire risk assessment and numerical modelling, as well as the ability to prepare and carry out laboratory tests in the context of fire spread. Knowledge in the use of CFD and fire behaviour simulators is also valued, as well as the ability to speak and write in Portuguese and English.
Work Plan: The selected candidate will develop tasks in the field of wildfire risk modelling at the Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI). Tasks include:
1) Preparation and performance of laboratory tests on fire spread;
2) Treatment and analysis of laboratory results;
3) Integration of heat emission models from vegetation burning with vulnerability models for building materials;
4) Participation in other tasks related to wildfires that may be considered as relevant;
5) Production of scientific reports and articles based on the work developed;
6) Participation in the dissemination tasks and appreciation of the results obtained.
Formalization of applications: Applications should be sent in pdf format to the following email addresses: miguelalmeida@adai.pt, xavier.viegas@dem.uc.pt and fatima.guedes@dem.uc.pt, putting in the subject of the email: HOUSE-REFUGE-BI-ADAI. The following documentation must be submitted: Curriculum Vitae (CV), Certificate of Qualifications including breakdown of the grades obtained in the subjects of the respective course and final grade, and letter of motivation.
