On December 17 2025, the Faculty of Arts of the University of Coimbra (FLUC) will host the colloquium ‘Let's Talk About Death’.
The event, to be held in Amphitheatre III of FLUC from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., will bring together experts from fields such as philosophy, medicine, theology, nursing, and palliative care for a day of deep and diverse reflection on death and dying.
Promoted by the Centre for Classical and Humanistic Studies (Complementary Project on Rationality and Hermeneutics) and its Laboratory of Rationality and Applied Ethics, the colloquium aims to open a space for dialogue on the topic, approaching it from multiple scientific and human perspectives.

The proceedings are divided into six sessions:
Session 1: Diogo Ferrer (CECH-FLUC) and Teresa Toldy (UFP) will address topics such as ‘Reproduction and Death’ and ‘Death and Salvation,’ respectively.
Session 2: Gonçalo Marcelo (CECH-FLUC) and José Manuel Beato (IEF-FLUC) will explore meditation on life in the face of imminent death and how to think the unthinkable.
Session 3: Carlos Braz Saraiva (FMUC) will present the paper ‘Dying Inside’.
Session 4: Joana Ricarte (CEIS20-UC) and Luís Umbelino (CECH-FLUC) will discuss the ‘Geography(ies) of Death’ and the ‘Body as a Threshold of Time’.
Session 5: Ema Grilo (ULSCoimbra) will focus on the role of Paediatric Palliative Care in early death, and Irma Brito (ESEUC) will address the issue of ‘Postponing the Time of Death’.
The closing session will feature Duarte Nuno Vieira (FMUC), who will present the intervention ‘Between the lines of death: the autopsy as a narrator of life,’ emphasising the importance of forensic medicine in understanding finitude.
This colloquium is an essential opportunity for an informed and compassionate debate on death and dying.
