History

The Portuguese Society of Rhetoric was founded in 2013 by Professor Belmiro Pereira, in the University of Porto, having developed various meetings and initiatives since then, on both national and international levels. Still under the guidance of the founding President, the Iberian-American Organisation of Rhetoric was founded.

Belmiro Fernandes Pereira is a Humanities professor at the University of Porto, with a PhD in Classical Studies from the University of Coimbra (2006). He has pursued studies on Rhetoric and its History, Latin Literature, and Renaissance Humanism. As an author and editor, he has published Retórica e Poética (Coimbra, Coimbra University Press, 2021), Francisco Leitão Ferreira: Nova Arte de Conceitos (Lisbon, Círculo de Leitores, 2019), Retórica e Eloquência em Portugal na Época do Renascimento (Lisbon, Casa da Moeda National Press, 2012), Retórica e Teatro (Porto, Editora UP, 2010). He is a researcher at the Centre for Classical and Humanistic Studies of the University of Coimbra and a member of several scientific associtions such as the International Society for the History of Rhetoric, the Asociación Latino-Americana de Retórica, and the Portuguese Society of Rhetoric.
