Confucius Institute of the University of Coimbra

The Confucius Institute of the University of Coimbra (UC) is located at the College of Jesus, a historical building that played a unique role in the dissemination of Portuguese language and culture. Indeed, UC has a centuries-old relationship with China, which started with the building of the first Jesuit College in Coimbra in the 16th century, where most of the missionaries commissioned to go to the East studied. This long history of contacts with China left lasting traces in the University, its library, archive and museum collections, endowing UC with a rich and meaningful legacy.

Opened to the public on 4 July 2016, the Confucius Institute of the University of Coimbra meets all the requirements to contribute to the dissemination of the Chinese language and culture, the increase of the knowledge about Chinese Traditional Medicine in Portugal and the qualification of the Portuguese professional practitioners in the field. UC Confucius Institute contributes also to the training of all of those interested in the strengthening of the links between Portugal and China.
