Non-EU Citizens who wish to carry out research activities in Portugal, must obtain a visa from the Portuguese Consulate/Embassy closest to their area of residence.
Support for Foreign Visiting Researchers in Visa Application Procedures
Researchers requiring a visa to enter and remain in Portugal must choose the “Assistance with the Visa Application Procedure” option when registering on the WCVR platform and inform the International Relations Unit (IRU) of the consulate at which their visa application will be submitted.
Upon completion of the registration, IRU will provide the necessary official documentation, which the researcher may utilise in his/her visa application with the relevant authorities.
⚠️ Note: The role of the DRI is limited to issuing and sending of the necessary official documentation. The entire visa application process must be conducted directly by the applicant with the Portuguese diplomatic authorities in their country of residence.
Find out about the types of visa most suitable for your case, the documentation required and the procedure for obtaining it at the Portuguese Consulate closest to your area of residence (search for locations and contacts on the interactive map on the Portuguese Communities Portal).
The visa application, associated costs and collection of documents required by the consular services are the exclusive responsibility of the applicants.
The assessment and validation of applications and the respective issuance of visas are the exclusive responsibility of the consular services.
