RIU Association of International Relations Professionals from

Portuguese Higher Education Institutions seated in Coimbra

The RIU was created on the 31st March 2000, seated in the University of Coimbra International Relations Service.

The ceremony took place on the Rectorate Senate Room and was presided by the Rector Magnificus of the University of Coimbra, representing the President of the Conselho de Reitores das Universidades Portuguesas. The Representative for the President of the Conselho Coordenador dos Institutos Superiores Politécnicos, the Vice-Rectores and Pro-Rectores of the University of Coimbra, other academic authorities and the President of the Associação Académica de Coimbra were present at the ceremony.

The Public deed was granted by approximately 40 professionals in the field of the International Relations from institutions all over the country, who became the founding associates.

In this special occasion, Doctor Filomena Marques de Carvalho, the main responsible for the creation of this Association, said a few words. Following the proper thanks to the University of Coimbra, in the person of the Rector Magnificus, regarding all support provided to the creation of RIU, she explained the main reasons that led to this event whose only flaw is its delay.

In her opinion, internationalization is an inevitable reality for any European citizen and it is exceedingly important for our students. "The bet made on the students scholarship comprises the internationalization of their studies through the development of a politics whose goals can only be achieved if this development is made by specialists who are up to the demands of an organized, professional and efficient international cooperation." In order to accomplish this, it is also fundamental that "the issues related to International Relations are not scattered around in services and administrative structures that have not been designed to deal with them".

It is up to RIU to play a decisive role in the training and increasing professional value of skilled staff in the field of international relations at the level of Universities.

RIU will start a discussion forum for issues regarding the Higher Education and its internationalization and it will promote cooperation between the people responsible for this internationalization in the several national and international institutions. RIU will also define joint methodologies and it will supply consulting services.
