With the main objective of promoting “cultural and interreligious dialogue”, the Academia para o Encontro de Culturas e Religiões da Universidade de Coimbra (Academy for the Meeting of Cultures and Religions of the University of Coimbra) (APECER-UC) was presented in the Sala de São Pedro, at the General Library ). Defined as “one of the projects that has most mobilized our energies and the ones we consider most striking for the coming years”, the director of APECER-UC, João Gouveia Monteiro explained the structure, mission and some of the events already scheduled for 2020 within the Academy.

The final of the 3 Minute-Thesis Competition (3MT) of the University of Coimbra (UC) takes place today, February 13, at 3 pm, in Sala do Carvão (Casa das Caldeiras). The session will count with the participation of 20 PhD students, from 23 to 65 years of age, spread over all areas of knowledge at the University of Coimbra. The winner of the UC 3MT will move on to the next stage where he/she will have the possibility to represent the UC before an international jury at the Coimbra Group, between 10 and 12 June, at the University of Montpellier, France.


The "I course on Mindfulness and Compassion" will take place, on February 14th and 15th, in the auditorium of the Centro Hospitalar e Universitário de Coimbra (CHUC). During the two-days course, the approximately 200 participants will learn about the results of several ongoing projects, especially in four major areas: education, health, personal development and organizations.

18 ongoing research projects in the field of forest fire prevention and fighting, funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) under the 2017 call, will be presented in Coimbra, next Friday, February 14th. This is the “1st Workshop on scientific research and technological development in the area of forest fire prevention and fighting”, which aims to maximize the results of ongoing projects and promote synergies between the various research groups working in this area. The initiative takes place, between 9 am and 5:30 pm, in the auditorium Laginha Serafim of the Department of Civil Engineering of the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the University of Coimbra (FCTUC).

The final of the Bot Olympics educational and training event takes place in the central square of Alma Shopping Centre on February 15th and 16th. The initiative has as main objective to make known the world of robotics and to promote the area of electrical engineering among the student community.

Wild tomato plants (from which tomatoes currently marketed are derived) and the first varieties that were domesticated in Central America (cherry tomatoes) have better defenses than modern tomato varieties, according to a UC study published in “New Phytologist” magazine.

The science fiction cinema cycle “AstroFlix” is back. Between February and May, always at 9 pm,  Rómulo - Centro Ciência Viva of the University of Coimbra will be the set for the exhibition of some of the most striking films related to space.
