A research team of the Centre for Neuroscience and Cell Biology and the Institute of Clinical and Biomedical Research of the Faculty of Medicine of the UC has discovered that the mushroom "Coriolus versicolor" increases the complexity of new neurons formed in the adult hippocampus, an area of the brain connected to memory. The study - published in the journal "Oncotarget" - was carried out on mice undergoing a diet with the biomass of the mushroom.

Duarte Nuno Vieira - director of the Faculty of Medicine of the UC (FMUC) - receives today the degree of Doctor Honoris Causa in Medicine from the University of Medicine and Pharmacy Grigore T. Popa in Romania. The ceremony takes place at the same time of the International Congress of Medical Ethics, in which the FMUC professor is one of the invited speakers.

To create awareness among the school community and society for the need to care for and protect watercourses is the objective of LIVING RIVER, an innovative international project that integrates a team of researchers of the Centre for Functional Ecology of the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the University of Coimbra. The team's first meeting will be held today and tomorrow at the Department of Life Sciences.

Applications are open for six joint-Ph.D. fellowships of the Carnegie Mellon Portugal programme, starting in academic year 2019/2020 in the areas of Communication and Information Technologies. More information available here.

The Festival "Caminhos do Cinema Português" is back. From 23 November to 1 December, the national cinema returns to Coimbra with about 60 films on display.

Tomorrow, at 6:00 p.m. the College of Arts will launch two exhibitions: "Água e Luz" by João Queiroz and "Victória sobre o Sol  - From Black Square to Loophole", a collective exhibition. Both will be open until 15 February 2019.
