Motivation
In 1951, Isaac Asimov started to write the Foundation Series. In it, a mathematician named Seldon uses statistical models (what would today be called machine learning) to predict the future. Given the nature of the unfolding events, looking to preserve and enhance the spirit of science and civilization, Seldon settles a group of scientists and engineers into a new Foundation, which would become the safeguard and cornerstone of the future galactic expansion. In this, the Foundation Series has become one of the most inspiring novels of all time to thousands of scientists and engineers worldwide.
The First Foundation Project is a collaboration between Feedzai and the University of Coimbra. Its objective is to inspire a new generation of students and professors to get out of their comfort zone and promoting looking into the future. To believe that it’s possible to aim and create great things out of nothing. To think differently. To be bold. To be optimistic.
Commitment
Feedzai commits to sponsor this project in 150.000€/year, for three years. The University of Coimbra commits to execute the program, following its core objective, and guaranteeing that the initiatives align with the established guiding principles.
A yearly renewal of the program is contingent on an evaluation of the initiatives being faithful to the program’s objective, its guiding principles, and effectiveness.
Guiding Principles
PROJECT PEOPLE INTO THE FUTURE.
People need inspiration.
People need to believe in a brighter future.
People need to be able to visualize themselves in that optimistic future to create great things.
PROMOTE HIGH STANDARDS AND EXCELLENCE.
Only with high standards and a demand for excellence one can become the best at what they are, what they can be and what they will be. High standards must be a motive to be proud, serve as example and inspire.
TAKE PEOPLE OUT OF THEIR COMFORT ZONE.
People that change the world are people that don’t travel the common path. They are comfortable in being uncomfortable. They constantly challenge themselves.
GIVING BACK AND HUMILITY.
High standards and excellence shouldn’t mean exclusion. The program should promote giving back by incentivizing people that participate to propagate their knowledge, their experience, and reach out to others.
