Call for Papers

The 2021 Coimbra Commemorative International Conference on the Star of Redemption -Wir wissen auch jetzt noch nichts von Gott, to be held at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Coimbra, 16th - 17th December, 2021, will be devoted to the formation and reception of the Star of Redemption. We invite all of those interested in Franz Rosenzweig’s thought and legacy to present their work according to the following themes:
I. Biographical and intellectual background of the Star of Redemption.
- The Star as a systematic response to the tension between immanence and transcendence.
- The ruins of German Idealism and Rosenzweig’s reworking of the concept of revelation.
- Dialogical writing and the turn to a you. The role of “speech-letters” in the composition of the Star.
II. The Star and the renovation of Jewish thought.
- Reception of God’s word and the responsibilities of election.
- Rosenzweig’s acquaintance with Sephardic religious communities and his use of kabbalist sources in the Star.
- Jewish messianic idea(s) and their role in the rethinking of the Philosophy of History.
III. Dialogical thinking and the receptions of the Star.
- Ethics of transcendence. Lévinas’ reception of the Star starting with Totalité et Infini.
- The word and the irrepresentable. The value of the philosophy of art in the Star.
- State and religious community in Rosenzweig’s Star.
- Rosenzweig on educative and therapeutic tasks.
Submit your abstract in an anonymized Word document with the maximum of 750 words (plus bibliography). Please make sure to inscribe your contribution in one or more of the above-mentioned lines (I-III). If your proposal is accepted, we will ask you to submit an extended abstract of 1500 to 2000 words that will be integrated in the Book of Abstracts to be delivered at the Conference.
The official languages of the congress are English, German, French, Spanish and Portuguese.

Notification of results: October 15, 2021.
