The academic year has two semesters. The first semester begins in the first fortnight of September, ending in January for the 1st examination period, which goes on until the beginning of February.
The second semester begins in February and goes on until the end of May/beginning of June (depending on the Faculty), when the second examination period starts. This examination period lasts one month and ends in July.
The exact dates of the beginning of the academic year may vary, depending on each Faculty; therefore you are strongly advised to arrive in Coimbra on September, 1 (if you come for the whole academic year or the 1st semester) or on February, 1 (if you come for the 2nd semester).
The Welcome Day of the first semester always takes place in the 1st Monday of the month of September and the second semester one in the second week of February. Another important thing that happens around these days, generally, is the Intensive Language Preparation Course. Besides all this, if you arrive earlier, you also have better chances of finding a suitable accommodation.
Christmas break is two weeks long, one before and another after Christmas. Easter break is one week long.
Holidays: January 1st, March 1st, April 25th, May 1st, June 10th, July 4th, August 15th, December 8th and 25th.
