The former library of the Institute of Anthropology (now part of the Library of Life Sciences) began its collection by collecting books from the libraries of the convents that were closed in 1834.
The proposal to found a special library was approved at the Faculty of Philosophy Council on March 4, 1852, although in 1842 the faculty had already begun efforts to create the library, as Joaquim Simões de Carvalho mentions in his Historical Memory of the Faculty of Philosophy (1872).
This specialized university library aimed to provide study material for teachers and students (pedagogical purposes), and also to provide specialized bibliography for scientific works (research purposes).
“Life Sciences Archive” is a monthly section that aims to disseminate DCV documentation/information.
