Seabra Dinis Library
Joaquim Seabra-Dinis (Sangalhos, 1914 - Lisbon, 1996) graduated in Medicine from the University of Coimbra. In the early 1940’s, he moved to Lisbon and was practised medicine at the Miguel Bombarda Hospital, Civil Hospitals and Júlio de Matos Hospital since its inauguration in 1942. In this hospital he has developed intense scientific, clinical and administrative activity, havingthus profoundly marked the Portuguese psychiatry of the mid-twentieth century. He has done several internships abroad at reputable research centers, participated in numerous national and international scientific meetings, taught several free courses and left a valuable written work.
Joaquim Seabra Dinis is a leading figure as a psychiatrist, writer, publicist, lecturer and author of studies on history of psychology, psychoanalysis, psychiatry, neurology, as well as works in the field of psychosomatic medicine, mesological causality of mental illness and painless childbirth.
The CEIS20 Group History and Sociology of Science and Technology aims to motivate the Portuguese scientific community to present research projects on Joaquim Seabra-Dinis (the doctor, the scientist and the citizen) within the framework of the humanistic-scientific culture of his time. , starting with the bibliographic and documentary collection donated by the family (Dr. Lina Seabra Dinis and Dr. Armando Myredores) to CEIS20. This collection, inaugurated on March 4, 2004 in a public ceremony integrated in the Cultural Week of the University of Coimbra - Science and Society (Scientific Culture in Portugal and in the world), is officially named Joaquim Seabra-Dinis Library, located in the CEIS20 building.
