Prof. André Mendes, PhD in Electrical Engineering (Energy Systems) at the University of Coimbra where is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering He is a researcher at the Institute of Telecommunications (IT) and coordinator of the Power Systems group of IT-Coimbra. His research interests are focused on condition monitoring and diagnostics of ac motor drives, fault tolerant adjustable speed AC drive systems, power supply systems and thermal analysis of induction machines. He participated in several works involving national and international companies, some of them financially supported by FCT. He is Principal Investigator of an on-going project financed by the FCT in the area of diagnostics of ac motor drives based on multilevel converter topologies. His publications mostly appear in IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics, on Industrial Electronics and on Industry Applications. He is member of the Portuguese Engineers Association and member of IEEE and participates as reviewer for some conferences and journals in the fields of power electronics converters and electrical machines.

He graduated in Electrical Engineering at the University of Coimbra in 1976, and did his PhD at the same University in Electrical Engineering in 1985, on the theme of Efficient Use of Electricity.He teaches since 1976 at the Faculty of Science and Technology, University of Coimbra, where he is Professor (Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering). Member of the Faculty Board from 1988 to 1992, responsible for institutional technical and administrative reorganization of the Faculty between 1989 and 1993.Scientific Coordinator of the Research Unit INESC Coimbra from 1999 to 2001 and chairman of the Board of INESC Coimbra in 2002 and 2003.He participated in 22 research projects, of which eight with companies, five with national public entities, seven with the European Commission and two with FCT, having led sixteen. It has over one hundred published works.Vice-Rector of the University of Coimbra from February 2003 to February 2011, he took responsibility for the areas of Administrative Management, Financial Management, Human Resource Management, Academic Management and Scientific Research, also coordinating the areas of information and communication technologies (ICT), libraries and institutional planning. Responsible for two institutional administrative reorganization of UC in 2003 and 2010.Director of the Institute for Interdisciplinary Research at the University of Coimbra between 2009 and 2011.Co-founder and coordinator of the University of Coimbra "Energy for Sustainability" Initiative, created in 2007.

A. Paulo Coimbra received his BSc (1985) and PhD (1996) degrees in Electrical Engineering from the Univ. of Coimbra, Portugal. He has been an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the Univ. of Coimbra since 1996. He is a researcher in the ISR-Institute of Systems and Robotics of the Univ. of Coimbra. His present research interests include f.e.m. electromagnetic and thermal analysis, electromagnetic compatibility, biped robotics, hyper-redundant robots and vision-based robot navigation. He has published over 100 papers in international conferences and about 30 papers on scientific journals. He has been a consultant in the company CWJ-Projecto SA, since 2008, in the field of electromagnetic and thermal analysis for the development and optimisation of several products such as domestic induction cook tops. He is co-author of one book and two patents.

Carlos Henggeler Antunes obtained his PhD in Electrical Engineering (Optimization and Systems Theory) at the University of Coimbra in 1992. He is currently Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computers, University of Coimbra and Director of the R&D Institute INESC Coimbra. His main research areas are energy systems and policies, multi-objective optimization and meta-heuristics, multi-criteria decision analysis, and decision support systems. He has been involved in R&D and consulting projects in the areas of energy efficiency, demand responsive energy management systems, algorithmic decision theory, energy-environment-economy interactions, uncertainty handling in multi-objective optimization and in decision support systems. His most recent publications appeared in Electrical Power and Energy Systems, Energy, Journal of the Operational Research Society, Renewable & Sustainable Energy Reviews, Computers and Operations Research, Energy and Buildings, Engineering Optimization, among others. He has served as guest editor of special issues of journals such as Int. J. of Systems Science, Energy Policy, European J. of Operational Research, among others. He is co-author of a book and co-editor of two books published by the University of Coimbra Press.

Fernando J. T. E. Ferreira received the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Coimbra, Coimbra, Portugal. He is currently a Professor in the University of Coimbra, Coimbra, Portugal. Since 1998, he has been a Researcher in the Institute of Systems and Robotics, University of Coimbra,   working in the field of electric motor driven systems. He has participated in several European projects dealing with energy-efficient motor technologies. He is the author/coauthor of more than 100 papers published in international journals and conference records. Prof. Ferreira was a recipient of the Best Paper Award at the 2001 IEEE/IAS Industrial and Commercial Power Systems Technical Conference, and of the Best Poster Presentation Award (for the technical competence displayed in the poster presentation) at the 2010 International Conference on Electrical Machines.

Gabriel Falcão graduated in Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP) in 1997, specialty in Telecommunications, where he also concluded a MSc degree in the area of Digital Signal Processing in 2002. He was a researcher at INESCPorto from 1997 until 2002. In 2003 he became Teaching Assistant at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Coimbra (FCTUC), Portugal. In 2010 he received a PhD in Telecommunications and Electronics from FCTUC, where he is currently an Assistant Professor. In 2011/12 he has worked as Visiting Professor at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), Switzerland. Presently, he is investigating efficient parallel computing architectures for LDPC codes and also developing applications based on heterogeneous multicore systems in the area of medical imaging. Gabriel is a member of Instituto de Telecomunicações and performs different collaborations under his R&D activities with INESC-ID, Lisbon, and other institutions and universities worldwide. He was awarded with the 2nd place at the Fraunhofer Portugal Challenge 2010, in the category of PhD theses. He is also a member of the IEEE and IEEE Signal Processing Society.

João P. Barreto received the “Licenciatura” and PhD degrees from the University of Coimbra, Portugal, in 1997 and 2004, respectively. From 2003 to 2004, he was a post- doctoral researcher with the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia. He has been an assistant professor with the University of Coimbra since 2004, where he is also a senior researcher with the Institute for Systems and Robotics. His current research interests include different topics in computer vision, with a special emphasis in geometry problems and applications in robotics and medicine. He is the author of tenth of peer-reviewed publications in the most prestigious journals and conferences in computer vision and robotics. He is also a regular reviewer for several conferences and journals having received four Outstanding Reviewer Awards in the last few years.

Jorge Batista received the B.Sc. degree ("Licenciatura") in Electrical Engineering and the Ph.D degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Coimbra, Portugal, in 1986 and 1999 respectively.He joins the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computers, University of Coimbra, Coimbra, Portugal, in 1987 as a research assistant where he is currently an Associate Professor. Since 2011 he is the Head of Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer from the Faculty of Science and Technology of University of Coimbra. He is a founding member of the Institute of Systems and Robotics (ISR) in Coimbra, where he is a Senior Researcher. His research interest focus on a wide range of computer vision and pattern analysis related issues, including real-time vision, video surveillance, video analysis, non-rigid modeling and facial analysis. More recently his research activity also focus on the interplay of Differential Geometry in computer vision and pattern recognition problems. He has been involved in several national and European research projects, several of them as PI at UC. He is an IEEE member.

Jorge Nuno de Almeida e Sousa Almada Lobo was born on the 23rd of September 1971, in Cambridge, UK. In 1995, he completed his five year course in Electrical Engineering at Coimbra University. In April 2002, he received the M.Sc degree with the thesis ‘‘Inertial Sensor Data Integration in Computer Vision Systems’’. In June 2007, he received the Ph.D degree with the thesis ‘‘Integration of Vision and Inertial Sensing’’.He was a junior teacher in the Computer Science Department of the Coimbra Polytechnic School, and later joined the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department of the Faculty of Science and Technology at the University of Coimbra, where he currently works as Assistant Professor. He is responsible for courses on Digital Design, Microprocessors and Computer Architecture.His current research is carried out at the Institute of Systems and Robotics, University of Coimbra, working in the field of computer vision, sensor fusion, and mobile robotics. Current research interests focus on inertial sensor data integration in computer vision systems, Bayesian models for multimodal perception of 3D structure and motion, and real-time performance using GPUs and reconfigurable hardware. He has been involved on several EU projects, including BACS — Bayesian Approach to Cognitive Systems (FP6-IST-027140) and HANDLE - Developmental pathway towards autonomy and dexterity in robot in-hand manipulation (FP7-2008-231640) and currently in BAMBI - Bottom-up Approaches to Machines dedicated to Bayesian Inference (FET - FP7-ICT-2013-C, 618024).He is an IEEE Senior Member and is currently vice president of the Portuguese Chapter of the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society (RAS).

Prof. Nuno Goncalves is researcher at the Institute for Systems and Robotics and Assistant Professor at the Dept. of Electrical and Computers Engineering of the University of Coimbra. He has received his MsC. and PhD degree in 2002 and 2008, respectively. His main research areas are computer vision and computer graphics with special emphasis to geometric problem in non-central projection vision systems. We has scientific publications in the following topics: omnidirectional vision, non-central cameras, optics, camera models, motion estimation, pose estimation, reflections for image rendering, sports vision and legged robotics. He is Principal Investigator of an on-going project funded by the Portuguese Science and Technology Foundation in the area of non-central camera models for computer graphics and computer-aided surgery. He participates regularly as reviewer for some of the most prestigious conferences and journals of the area of computer vision.

His current research interests include computational intelligence, intelligent control, machine learning, robotics, robot manipulators, mobile robots, intelligent vehicles, estimation, control, automation, embedded systems, real-time systems, fuzzy systems, neural networks, soft sensors, industrial systems; and in general architectures and systems for processing, communication, and control in industrial environments, robot manipulators, mobile robots, and intelligent vehicles. Rui P. Rocha is an Assistant Professor (tenure position) with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of University of Coimbra and a Senior Researcher of the Institute of Systems and Robotics - University of Coimbra (ISR-UC). He received the Engineering degree, the M.Sc. degree, and the Ph.D. degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Faculty of Engineering of University of Porto, in 1996, 1999 and 2006, respectively. His main research area is cooperative mobile robotics and his main research interests are multi-robot systems, human-robot team cooperation, distributed control, cooperative perception, efficient information sharing, and autonomous robots. He has been involved in several FP6 and FP7 European funded R&D projects developed in consortium for the past few years and is currently PI of a nationally funded research project on cooperation between human teams and robotic teams in urban search and rescue scenarios. As of 2014, he is the co-author of about 80 papers published in ISI-indexed scientific journals, book chapters, and proceedings of peer-reviewed international scientific conferences. He began his career as an electrical engineer at enterprise EFACEC Automation and Robotics, where he worked between Oct. 1996 and Jan. 2000 in the development of automated material handling devices based on AGVs and participated in the design of such systems for important clients, such as Bank of China in Hong Kong and Repsol YPF refinery in Argentina. He began his career as a teacher at Department of Informatics of University of Minho, where he taught digital systems and microelectronics between Nov. 1998 and Feb. 2000, before joining University of Coimbra as a teaching assistant and ISR-UC as a researcher.

Sérgio M. A. Cruz *was born in Coimbra, Portugal, in 1971. He received the Elect. Eng. degree, the M.Sc. degree and the PhD degree from the University of Coimbra, Portugal, in 1994, 1999 and 2004, respectively. Since 1994, he has been with the University of Coimbra, where he is currently an Assistant Professor and Director of the Electric Machines Laboratory, at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.His research interests cover the areas of rotating electric machines, power transformers, electric drives and power electronic converters, with special emphasis on fault diagnosis, fault tolerance and digital control. Urbano Nunes received the Lic. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Coimbra, Portugal, in 1983 and 1995, respectively. Prof. Nunes is a Full Professor with the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department of Coimbra University, and a researcher of the Institute for Systems and Robotics (ISR-UC) where he is the coordinator of the Automation and Robotics for Life (AR4LIFE) Group. He has been involved with/responsible for several funded projects at both national and international levels in the areas of mobile robotics, intelligent vehicles and intelligent transportation systems (ITS). He has research interests in several areas in connection with intelligent vehicles and human-centered mobile robotics with more than 150 published papers in these areas. Dr. Nunes was Vice President for Technical Activities of the IEEE ITS Society (2011-2012), a member of the Board of Governors of ITS Society (2009-2011), and a Cochair of the Technical Committee on Autonomous Ground Vehicles and ITS (2006-2011) of the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society (RAS). He serves as Associate Editor the journals: IEEE Transactions on Intelligent Transportation Systems and IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Magazine. He was the General Chair of the 2010 IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Conference, Funchal-Madeira, Portugal, and a General Chair of the 2012 IEEE Intelligent Robots and Systems, Vilamoura, Portugal

Vitor Silva received the Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Coimbra, Portugal, in 1996. He is currently an Assistant Professor at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Coimbra. Portugal. He is also a researcher of the Instituto de Telecomunicações (Coimbra Pole). His research interests include signal processing, parallel computing, image and video compression and information and coding theory.
