An internship on Computational Biology

My name is Américo Matusse, from the University Eduardo Mondlane, Maputo, Mozambique. I completed my PhD in Mathematical Sciences at the University of Pretoria, South Africa, in January 2024, under the supervision of professors Michael Chapwanya and Yves Dumont. I defended a thesis entitled “Modelling and analysis of plant-virus interaction in plant co-infection”. In May 2024, I was awarded the 4th Advanced Internship in Mathematics, funded by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. As part of this programme, I worked in Computational Biology under the supervision of Adérito Araújo, from the University of Coimbra, Portugal.

The internship was divided into two parts: the first three months at a distance, with the aim of introducing basic topics in computational biology, and the second part at the University of Coimbra.

During my visit to the University of Coimbra I had the opportunity to start a project with Adérito Araújo and Ana Jacinta Soares, from the University of Minho, related to modelling networked landscapes. The aim of this project was to investigate the environmental system in relation to three indicators that describe the ecological state of each Landscape Unit (LU), the green area of the LU with high ecological quality, the ecological energy produced by the vegetation in the LU and the impact of human behaviour on the ecological quality of the environment. I also had the opportunity to make contact with Joana Costa, from the Centre for Functional Ecology at the University of Coimbra, with whom I discussed the idea of starting a project related to the flavescence dorée disease, which particularly affects grapevines and is a major concern for the stability and sustainability of the wine industry.

Overall, my experience in Portugal, in particular at the Department of Mathematics of the University of Coimbra, was unique. The institution provides a great atmosphere for researchers, with highly active research groups, and the city is very well coming, making the University and its location a perfect much for researcher. I definitely highly recommend university for anyone looking for an academic career in Mathematics.
