Launch of the PICASSO international research project at the IMB*: a scientific bridge between France, Spain, and Portugal

An acronym for “hyPerbolIC models, numerical AnalysiS and Scientific cOmputation,” PICASSO illustrates the ambition of this project: to explore and develop innovative approaches to modeling and scientific computing in order to address contemporary challenges.

An ambitious and strategic project for the future of applied mathematics.

Designated an International Research Project (IRP) by the CNRS Mathematics division on January 1, 2025, for a period of five years, PICASSO is co-directed by several renowned academics: C. Berthon (Nantes University), C. Chalons (University of Versailles Saint-Quentin), and R. Loubère (CNRS and University of Bordeaux). The project extends internationally, with key partners in Málaga (Spain) and Coimbra (Portugal), contributing to the scope and scale of the project at the European level.

The PICASSO project explores a wide range of scientific topics, covering areas such as:

- Nonlinear partial differential equations (PDEs)

- High-performance numerical schemes for simulating complex systems

- Numerical analysis of mathematical models

- High-performance computing, with a focus on advanced scientific computing

- Geophysical simulation of natural phenomena such as tsunamis, avalanches, and coastal flows.
