Ana I.G. Mata obtained both her BSc. (2013) and MSc. (2015) degrees in Medicinal Chemistry at the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the University of Coimbra. During that time, she worked in photodynamic therapy (PDT) and studied its effects in vitro and in vivo, under the supervision of Prof. Luis Arnaut. Following the work from her MSc. thesis, she continued collaborating within the same group, on the evaluation of immunogenic antitumor whole-cell vaccines generated by PDT and the immune response involved on vascular-PDT for the treatment of tumours.
In 2016, she was accepted for a fellowship at the MedChemTrain PhD programme and began her PhD in Chemistry (specialization in Medicinal Chemistry) at the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the University of Coimbra. Currently, she is working on her PhD project supervised by Prof. Rui M.M. Brito, for the development of a targeting strategy that can be applied to PDT.
