SUSTRAINABLE wins European funding, a project coordinated by João Paulo Fernandes
A strategic partnership project, coordinated by João Paulo Fernandes, Researcher at the Center for Informatics and Systems at the University of Coimbra (CISUC), aims to promote sustainability in the development of computer software. The Project won European funding under the Erasmus + program (Key Action 2 - cooperation for innovation and the exchange of good practices).
The “SUSTRAINABLE - Promoting Sustainability as Fundamental Driver in Software Development Training and Education” - which brings together 10 partners, from seven countries, and will receive around 350 thousand euros - arises from the “growing global concern with environmental sustainability issues, which still it is not reflected in the area of computer engineering in higher education", explains João Paulo Fernandes, member of the Energy for Sustainability Initiative at the University of Coimbra.
The objective of the team of the researcher and professor at the Department of Computer Engineering at the Faculty of Science and Technology (FCTUC)- with research carried out in this field - is to produce and share knowledge that promotes sustainability in the production of software (which consumes less energy resources) and to integrate these environmental concerns into the curricular structures of the IT area. “Controlling the software is crucial to reduce the increasing energy footprint of the Information and Communication Technologies systems. The SUSTRAINABLE project advocates the introduction of all facets of sustainability as a major concern in software development. We want these factors to be an important topic in the training of computer engineers of the future ”, João Paulo Fernandes explained.
