19 january, 2019

The paper "Review of passive PCM latent heat thermal energy storage systems towards buildings' energy efficiency" was awarded the "Best review paper 2008- 2017 " in the "Best Paper Awards of Energy and Buildings published in the period from 1998 to 2017". The article was published in 2013 in the Energy and Buildings journal by Professors Nelson Soares (DEM-UC, EfS-UC, ADAI, ISISE), José Costa (DEM-UC, EfS-UC, ADAI), Adélio Gaspar , ADAI) and Paulo Santos (DEC-UC, ISISE).

The research was the result of the PhD work of the first author, developed under his PhD in Sustainable Systems of Energy in the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the University of Coimbra (DEM-UC). The investigation project was funded by the FCT (Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia) and framed under the MIT-Portugal Program and the Energy for Sustainability (EfS) initiative of the University of Coimbra.

The article explores the problem of integrating Phase Change Materials (PCMs) into buildings, in the context of improving their thermal behavior and energy efficiency. The article reviewed the state of the art in the main thematic areas recognized and considered to identify the main lines of research strategies for the next decade.
