Autumn 2021
An illustrated anthology of Camões: a global poet for today
André Carrilho (independent artist), Helder Macedo (King’s College,
London), and Thomas Earle (University of Oxford)
Respondent: Filipa Medeiros Araújo (University of Coimbra)
Thursday, 18th November 2021, 5 p.m., online roundtable
Following the publication of a new bilingual anthology of Luís de Camões’ work, this roundtable will discuss this edition’s contribution to viewing Camões as a global poet for today. Indeed, how can Camões’ words and poetic images stimulate the understanding of the time in which he lived, but also of our own time? How do the selected texts address current issues, such as cultural relations, colonialism, and gender inequality? Finally, how do the Carrilho’s illustrations interact with the text?
Camões, however, was a poet of doubt, rather than certainty, stimulating questions rather than answers.
