Merit Scholarships and Awards for UC International Students



Committed to promoting, boosting and spreading knowledge in the most diverse areas and on a global scale, the University of Coimbra’s (UC) ambition is to adopt and create measures that contribute to the human, scientific and technological development and are an incentive to research.

With the aim of awarding the merit and ensure equal cross-cutting opportunities to the whole community, the UC has created the Regulation no. 346/2025, which is the Regulation on the Merit Scholarships and Awards awarded to International Students in the University of Coimbra. Therefore, the following Scholarships, Awards and Distinctions are planned for International Students:

Graduate Studies Merit Scholarship (provided for in article no. 2)

It is awarded annually to international students enrolled and registered for courses of Bachelor’s and Integrated Master’s Degree, on a full-time basis at the UC, according to the following:

In the 1st curricular year:

  • a) Students who were admitted to the UC by means of the Special Contest for International Students or the contest of change of institution/course pair;
  • b) Students who hold the International Student Status at the time of the enrolment and registration for the academic year to which the Scholarship refers;
  • c) Students who hold an admission grade equal to or higher than 140 points, without rounding.

In the 2nd and subsequent curricular years:

2 - International Students who are enrolled and registered at the UC on a full time basis and have an annual registration in the subsequent years of a 1st cycle or Integrated Master's degree course keep their Graduate Studies Merit Scholarship until they complete the cycle of studies and during the usual number of years or semesters of that cycle of studies.

The amount of the scholarship to be awarded is between €1000 and €2000 depending on the average grade (according to ranges between 14 and equal to or higher than 17 points).

4 - Concerning the students that were admitted to the UC by means of the contest of change of institution/course pair, the result of the assessment of that application to the UC will be taken into consideration for the awarding of the scholarship.

Incentive Scholarship for Priority Fields of Study (provided for in article no. 3)

Periodically, the UC may define a list of priority development courses, 1st cycle or Integrated Master's Degree Courses, within strategic domains, to be published on the institutional webpage, and award the students who enrol and register for them annually and on a full time basis, and who have an admission grade equal or higher than 13, without rounding, with a Scholarship of €2000 euros that will be kept until the student completes the cycle of studies and during the usual number of years or semesters of that cycle of studies..

This Scholarship is not cumulated with the other Scholarships provided for in this Regulation.

Incentive Scholarship for Master’s Degree Research and Scientific Production (provided for in article no. 4)

These Scholarships are aimed at students holding the international student status, who are admitted to Master’s Degree Cycles of Studies at the UC, and enrol and register for them, on an annual and full time basis.


The Scholarship consists of a support amounting to 2000 euros to pay the Master’s Degree tuition fee, and is awarded in each year or semester, as the case may be, until the student completes the cycle of studies and during the usual number of years or semesters, as the case may be, of that cycle of studies.

CPLP Master's Degree Scholarship (provided for in article no. 5)

This Scholarship is aimed at the Students holding the International Students Status who are from a country member of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP) and are admitted to a Master’s Degree Cycles of Studies at the UC, and enrol and register for it, on an annual and full time basis. These students are awarded a Scholarship of €1000, which is cumulated with the scholarship provided for in the previous article, and it is kept until the student completes the cycle of studies and during the usual number of academic years/semesters of that cycle of studies.

Continuing Studies Scholarship at the UC (provided for in article no. 6)

This Scholarship is aimed at Students holding the International Students Status who are admitted to a Master’s Degree Cycle of Studies at the UC, and enrol and register for it, on an annual and full time basis. These students are awarded a Scholarship of €1000, which is cumulated with the scholarships provided for in the articles number 4 and 5, if applicable, and it is kept until the student completes the cycle of studies and during the usual number of academic years/semesters of that cycle of studies.


Note:

The change from international student status to national student or equivalent status, as well as the withdrawal from studies at the UC implies the immediate cancellation of the Scholarship and the obligation to pay the amounts or instalments associated with it (article no. 7).

Foundation Year Award (provided for in article no. 8)

It is aimed at international students enrolled and registered at the UC for the Non-Degree Courses of the Foundation Year of Sciences and Technology and the Foundation Year of Social and Human Sciences, and whose academic pathway stands out for excellence.

A Foundation Year UC Merit Declaration is issued to the Students who are awarded the Foundation Year Award, according to the aforementioned numbers.

1st Year UC International Student Merit Board (provided for in article no. 9)

The best international students with an admission grade equal or higher than 14, who are enrolled and registered for 1st Cycle or Integrated Master’s Degree Courses, 1st curricular year, for the first time, at the UC are distinguished by being included in the 1st year UC International Student Merit Board.

The 1st year UC International Student Merit Board is mentioned in the Diploma Supplement.

Other Awards and Distinctions (provided for in article no. 10)

1. UC International Student Distinction Diploma (students whose admission grade to the UC, or in a new cycle of studies, is equal to or higher than 17 points),

2. Diploma of Excellence (international Master's degree student whose Master´s degree course final average grade, at the UC, is equal to or higher than 17 points),
